History's worst quotes from believers
- just the tip of the iceberg. Selected from Jim Walker's compilation.

...the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt...
-The author of Exodus describing the actions of the killer God in Ex. 12:29

Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
-Psalm 137:9 KJV

And I will kill her children with death...
-The alleged Jesus in Rev. 2:23 KJV

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
-The alleged Jesus in Matthew 10:34

And as for those who disbelieve and reject Our Signs, they are the people of Hell.
-The alleged Allah's words in the Quran, 5:11

The only reward of those, who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to create disorder in the land, is that they be slain or crucified or their hands and feet be cut off on account of their enmity, or they be expelled from the land. That shall be a disgrace for them in this world, and in the Hereafter they shall have a great punishment.
-Allah's alleged words in the Quran, 5:34

Christ wants to slay reason and subdue the arrogance of the Jews...
-Martin Luther (Sermons on the Gospel of St. John, Luther's Works, V.22, p.320)

Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: "by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."
-Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf, Chapter 2)

Those who are not Christians go to a place of suffering and torment called hell.
-Pat Robertson (Answers to 200 of Life's Most Probing Questions, Bantam Books, 1984)

I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
-President George H. W. Bush (the First), during an August 27, 1987 interview by Rob Sherman

God is on our side, and Satan is on the side of the United States.
-Saddam Hussein

I told all four [Congressional leaders] that there are going to be some times where we don't agree with each other, but that's OK. If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator.
-George W. Bush (the Second), in a news conference at the U.S. Capitol, from CNN news, 18 Dec. 2000

This is America, God has sent one of the attacks by God and has attacked one of its best buildings. And this is America filled with fear from the north, south, east and west, thank God.

"Reuben Mattus, a young entrepreneur with a passion for quality and a vision for creating the finest ice cream, worked in his mother's ice cream business selling fruit ice and ice cream pops from a horse drawn wagon in the bustling streets of the Bronx, New York. The family business grew and prospered throughout the 1930's, 40's and 50's, and by 1961 Mr. Mattus decided to form a new company. He called his new brand Häagen-Dazs."
- from The History of Häagen-Dazs.

Kudos is due Aini for her alert on the ice cream's origin. That explains why I don't see their cafés here in Scandinavia.

"I read somewhere that everyone on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation. Between us and everybody else on this planet."
- Six Degrees of Separation, John Guare (1938- )

I very well remember playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with Azmi and Riszzal (and I do miss those days). Searching for the quote above, which Stef read to me once, I found something that I had never thought about before – who came up with the Bacon game? Interesting to know. It was in 1994; three Pennsylvanian college boys with too much time on their hands and a bottle of Southern Comfort came up with the idea based upon Guare's play. Craig Fass, Brian Turtle and Mike Ginelli wrote a letter to then TV talk-show host Jon Stewart, who invited them on his show to demonstrate Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. From there it spread like wildfire; a book was published, websites mushroomed, and the cult-fad was born.

The best site I found was The University of Virginia's The Oracle of Bacon where the total number of linkable actors is currently at 555,571. Everything has been worked out so it defeats the point of the game really, but still fun anyway. Enter an actor's name, and The Oracle gives impressive results. Out of the 555,571 actors, more than half alone have the Bacon number of 3, just 698 actors have the Bacon number of 6 and only one actor has the Bacon number of 10. The Oracle surprises me good. From a few of the results below, I still haven't hit a Bacon 4.

Marlene Dietrich has a Bacon number of 2.
Marlene Dietrich was in Marlene (1984) with Maximilian Schell
Maximilian Schell was in Telling Lies in America (1997) with Kevin Bacon

Joanna Lumley has a Bacon number of 2.
Joanna Lumley was in Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) with Robert Wagner
Robert Wagner was in Wild Things (1998) with Kevin Bacon

Audrey Hepburn has a Bacon number of 2... did you know this Leona?
Audrey Hepburn was in They All Laughed (1981) with Colleen Camp
Colleen Camp was in Trapped (2002) with Kevin Bacon

Charles Chaplin has a Bacon number of 3.
Charles Chaplin was in A Countess from Hong Kong (1967) with Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando was in Hearts of Darkness (1991) with Laurence Fishburne
Laurence Fishburne was in Mystic River (2003) with Kevin Bacon

Revolutionary Worker #1131, December 16, 2001

Prior to launching a war against Afghanistan, George Walker Bush was considered one of America's more inept presidents. All that changed following September 11, 2001, when Bush began his campaign in Afghanistan. The ongoing decimation of Afghan cities and countryside under his command have killed an estimated 2,000 people. In addition, Bush has openly declared his intent to commit more terrorist attacks throughout the world against nations and peoples he views as "unfriendly." Through his recent actions, Bush has unquestionably risen to the level of 'evil mastermind', having earned his place among the most murderous of U.S. presidents while still retaining his reputation as a moron.

I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint.

The Broken Column 1944
Oil paint on Masonite, by
Frida Kahlo

When Frida Kahlo was injured in a bus accident at the age of 18, an iron rod plunged through her, severely damaging her spine and pelvis. The painting above captures her pain and the anguish with her injuries, which plagued her until her death. The ground behind her cracks apart, just as her body breaks in two; a crumbling column supports her head, a corset braces her, and her skin is tormented with nails as tears drain from her eyes. Vulnerability is the object, and the subject is will.

Cinema on Sunday at Vika, Frida was the choice. I now regret not buying the hardback copy of The Diary of Frida Kahlo when I had the chance to at Tower, not heeding Joyce's recommendation on one of her favourite artists. A concise biography about Kahlo was all I read, concise and evidently not comprehensive enough for me to be moved by her life and paintings. I am now. Exhilarated that I have seen Frida and grateful that the film was made - haunting and beautiful as it is - had it not been for the film, I probably would have continued to miss the concealed power of the inspiring works she had left behind. It is like finding a treasure, when the treasure had always been there beneath my feet.

"I hope the leaving is joyful and I hope never to return."
- Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

I Am Mine by Eddie Vedder

The selfish, they're all standing in line
Faithing and hoping to buy themselves time
Me, I figure as each breath goes by
I only own my mind

The north is to south what the clock is to time
There's east and there's west and there's everywhere life
I know I was born and I know that I'll die
The in between is mine
I am mine

And the feeling, it gets left behind
All the innocence lost at one time
Significant, behind the eyes
There's no need to hide...
We're safe tonight

The ocean is full cause everyone's crying
The full moon is looking for friends at high tide
The sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied
I only know my mind
I am mine

And the feelings that get left behind
All the innocence broken with lies
Significance, between the lines
We may need to hide...

And the meanings that get left behind
All the innocence lost at one time
We're all different behind the eyes
There's no need to hide.

- From the 2002 Pearl Jam album, Riot Act.

The Sandvika Tennisklubb looks more like a circus than what it is with its enormous inflatable winter tent sheltering the courts. Located just a five-minute drive from here, T and I played there this evening after having planned to do so ages ago. I was out of touch with my swings and out of breath after the first set. Not that I ever was in touch, I simply have worsened. Needless to say who won then – the one time Norwegian national finalist. Tennis sessions will be a weekly event until the day I beat T. I shall not give up.

It was refreshing coming home after the game, basking in the bath with drops of the ginseng oil Mariam gave. I thought about the last time I was on a tennis court, before tonight that is, and it was more than a decade ago at St. Pat's. There were only two courts at the school so doubles were usually played on ECA Saturdays. The courts seemed so much bigger then and sweaty palms always irritated me. With tennis in Norway, my hands remain cold and dry.

More nostalgia. At the kampong when I was a kid, there was a tennis court at Tok Ahmad's where we kids played 'police & thieves' most of the time, running along the lines on the court to make tagging all the tougher. It was on that court where I learned to ride a bicycle, and it was on that court where a picture of me receiving first prize for the kindergarten race was taken. My brother bought me a junior's racquet (a Dunlop, with John McEnroe's name printed on it) and after all these years, on my last trip to Singapore, I saw it at Iyta's apartment. A sticker I had stuck on its side was still there, in bold black letters and a red shape in between - I (heart) tennis.

In a strange way, I find the blog theywantmeto rather artistic. A punishment perhaps? Translated (word by word) from the blog description, the Spanish quote reads:

Sometimes connected to Internet, I cross the wall, open to doors, connections, adventures, conversations, with my virtual eyes I watch, because you want to know, virtual reality to you, because you want to cross, because thus you want to love, because thus you want to dance, virtual reality. Connected to the console, already never you feel single, are treasures, enemies and unknown beings, new worlds, other languages, destined to stars with your virtual eyes you sail distant seas. - Aviador Dro.

On the telly tonight, 'vertical blind' was mentioned on one of those low rated sitcoms, which I usually watch for two minutes just to see how bad they are before switching over to another channel as the habit goes. That was the second time in a few days that I heard vertical blind; both on American programmes. What annoys me is that the blinds that were featured weren't the vertical ones but venetian blinds and venetian blinds are horizontal! Is it complicated at all to tell vertical and venetian apart? They don't even rhyme for pete's sake. Whassup dude, blind or sumtin'?

At least Jack Nicholson knows his blinds.
"You can't eat the venetian blinds, Curly. I just had 'em installed on Wednesday."

To tell you the truth, I am rather perplexed by the concept of art. What one person considers to be art is often not art to another. 'Beautiful' and 'ugly' are old-fashioned concepts that are seldom applied these days; perhaps justifiably, who knows? Something repulsive, which gives you a moral hangover, and hurts your ears or eyes, may well be art. Only kitsch is not art - we're all agreed about that. Indeed, but what is kitsch? If only I knew.

When I saw the cover of National Geographic's latest collectors' issue, I thought it was a joke. The soon to be released Swimsuits: 100 Years of Pictures, is to me as incongruous as Sports Illustrated if they were to publish national costumes of the world. I don't get it, this concept of NG's swimsuit issue. Out of topics already? How bright they are taking a different route with the hope of a bestseller. How desperate they seem. The cover says it all - a nude woman with three strategically placed scallop shells, specially photographed by Sarah Leen. NG editor, Bill Allen:

"The whole issue is just a retrospective of how people have dressed to have fun in the water over the last century. If you look through the magazine, you will see that there are people in all stages of dress and all kinds of bathing costumes, so it is very much in keeping with the whole cultural history of the world, which is what National Geographic portrays."

Whatever. Just say profit, dumkopf. I still love NG anyway.

Learned new words today playing Scrabble on the computer. I have not been out much due to the invariable cold outside. Shovelled the snow off the balcony again in the afternoon and felt that that was enough. No wonder almost everyone here has a dog - they'll then be forced to take walks. The pavement outside isn't a pretty sight. Where all is white, patches of bright yellow snow mark territories. What have those dogs been drinking, I wonder.

According to an astrological chart...

March 4, 1974
10:05 AM
Time Zone is -7.5 hrs
Singapore, Singapore

Rising Sign is in 06 Degrees Taurus. Calm and deliberate, you hate to move quickly or act hastily. Very practical, every effort must count or you can't be bothered. Patient, persistent and steady, but very stubborn -- you can't be pushed or pressured into anything. You seem outwardly self-assured because you tend to repress your inner tension and turmoil. You exude an earthy warmth, friendliness and charm. You demand comfortable surroundings and appreciate the good life. Be careful of a tendency to be overly self-indulgent. At times, you are lazy and difficult to motivate. Overcoming inertia is a problem for you and, because you are not by nature a self-starter, it is often necessary for you to receive stimuli from others in order to get moving.

Sun is in 13 Degrees Pisces. Extremely sensitive and emotional, you absorb the emotions of others (whether positive or negative) like a sponge. Emotionally vulnerable, you are easily upset and tend to cry readily. You are at your best when you can structure your environment in such a way that you are surrounded by positive, upbeat people. You are very helpful and understanding of the needs of others. Indeed, at times this can be a disadvantage, because you can be a sucker for anyone who needs help. Shy, dreamy, romantic in nature, you delight in retreating into your private fantasy world. Just be careful that you do not get lost in it! Trust your intuitions -- you may be quite psychic.

Moon is in 14 Degrees Cancer. For the most part, you are very strong and secure emotionally. You intuitively know what to do to make others feel comfortable, loved, accepted and needed. You naturally enjoy feeding and taking care of others. Be careful that your mothering does not turn into smothering. At times, you tend to feel that those to whom you are attached can never do anything without your assistance and support. Extremely sensitive by nature, it hurts you deeply whenever anyone criticizes you. You have an almost desperate need to be loved and wanted and needed by everyone with whom you come into contact, and you go out of your way to be accommodating to them.

Mercury is in 29 Degrees Aquarius. You tend to be very opinionated -- you have strongly felt notions about things and are quite vocal about expressing and defending them. Yet you are also an original thinker -- you enjoy shocking others with your offbeat, original thoughts. You appreciate and need mental and intellectual stimulation. Your judgment is usually fair and impartial -- you can be a good critic because you can remain objective and unemotional about most things.

Venus is in 01 Degree Aquarius. You are a friendly and outgoing individual, but close relationships are difficult for you to maintain due to your fear that they will cause you to lose your freedom. You attract friends and associates who are exciting, different and sometimes a bit odd. You are popular with others and enjoy working within a group toward group goals.

Mars is in 02 Degrees Gemini. Your energies get turned on quickly whenever anything interests you. But you have a very short attention span and it is difficult for you to complete tasks because something else more interesting always seems to be beckoning. You love to debate and argue, usually in a spirit of friendly disagreement. But watch out that you do not get too overly aggressive or antagonistic or others will be quick to take offense where none may have really been intended. You need to be in constant physical motion -- sports or daily exercise is a must for you if you are to feel fit and healthy.

Jupiter is in 28 Degrees Aquarius. Your personal growth occurs when you have the freedom to do things in new and interesting ways -- this brings out your natural inventiveness. You are an individualist, but you are also attracted to mass movements that emphasize social betterment and you will devote much time and energy to their efforts. Very fair- minded and objective, you have extraordinary skills at organization and administration.

Saturn is in 27 Degrees Gemini. You are such a clear thinker and speaker, with a logical orderly mind, that you are repulsed by abstract, intangible or unorganized thoughts or ideas. But you tend to get uptight about speaking in public because you are afraid to be wrong. Remember that the best way to learn is by making mistakes. Also, you will be so carefully prepared that you probably will not make many mistakes anyway. To be interesting to you, ideas have to be practical and useful.

Uranus is in 27 Degrees Libra. You, as well as your entire peer group, have a very free, unstable and unconventional approach to relationships and emotional commitments. You will be attracted to experiments in marriage and shared lifestyles. Personal freedom is more important to you than entangling emotional bonds. In the realm of art and aesthetics, you are attracted to the bizarre, shocking and unusual.

Neptune is in 09 Degrees Sagittarius. You, and your entire generation, are heavily involved in investigating and idealizing foreign and exotic intellectual systems and religious philosophies. The most extreme ideals will be pursued with gusto. You will be at the forefront of humanitarian attempts to improve the lot of those who are in need of assistance. You will be comfortable with the concept of the "global village".

Pluto is in 06 Degrees Libra. For your entire generation, this is a time of radical changes in society's attitude toward marriage and interpersonal relationships. There is a general fear and awe at the power inherent in making emotional or contractual commitments -- they will not be entered into lightly.

N. Node is in 25 Degrees Sagittarius. You will probably have many different contacts and acquaintances throughout your life. You're quite gregarious by nature and your natural curiosity about others lets you take the lead in forming new relationships. You'll form close ties with those who have similarly idealistic ideas -- especially those who can stimulate you intellectually in your chosen field of interest. Your enthusiasm for learning new things may also cause you to do quite a bit of traveling. Because you probably will have many wide-ranging interests and concerns, you most likely will have contacts and connections in various parts of the country (or world).

Played National Geographic's Geospy and I am appalled at my score for Africa. Within 180 seconds, I embarrassingly located only 21 out of the possible 53 countries. Adding salt to my bleeding pride, I had actually found this test filed under NGKids! Time to unroll the world map once again, or get it framed. Laying it on the coffee table with a protective glass on top isn't such a bad idea.

Africa, 180 secs - scored 21/53
Asia, 180 secs - scored 40/47
Europe, 180 secs - scored 32/37
N. America, 60 secs - scored 13/15
Oceania, 15 secs - scored 4/4
S. America, 90 secs - scored 12/12

I'm starting the year off right... I am plotting a hot bondage/torment scene to do to an old friend this afternoon and evening. It's been ages since I had a chance to play with a boy.

A few impatient rockets whizzed prematurely into the sky as on every other New Year's Eve. As early as 3pm after the sun went down, swishes here and explosions there scribbled crackles of fireworks on the dark sheet of twilight like postscripts – they cannot be ignored. Sparsely and building up, when the clock struck twelve the war hit its peak. Red, yellow, green and blue sparks flowered and fell like the snow, leaving fogs of smoke and dusts of black. Frightened birds flew in frenzy from their roosts for they weren't aware a new year had begun.

T bought a dozen rockets this year and a barrel that consecutively shot another dozen with just one strike of the match. For the rockets, we stuck empty bottles into the snow as launch pads. The rockets came attached with wooden sticks that went into the bottles. Pointing up to the sky, we ignited the tails and then stood a safe distance. Loud were the hisses, colourful was the night. My fourth New Year's Eve in Norway and the might of the fireworks reigns supreme.

We are now at the cabin in Golsfjellet. For the first time, the cardphone works accordingly with the laptop hence this post is possible because of it. There's an incredible amount of snow this winter, quality snow for skiers but I'm not one. Usually, I'd be able to shovel the snow off the porch at one go but today; I managed to clear merely a fourth – so much there is, easily above a meter. And I can't stand being outside for long either since the frozen air is a killer, piercing like never before at –27ºC (the lowest temperature this winter for southern Norway had been –35ºC). I don't think I'll even attempt to shovel the roof.

Indoors, this little pyromaniac has plenty of wood to smile wickedly at. Poor fallen trees sacrificed for the proverbial devil's element - fire. Speaking of trees, T and I went to Eldorado a couple of nights ago to catch LOTR The Two Towers. Absolutely fantastic; a more mesmerizing battle scene I have not seen.

I want to see the northern lights. Golsfjellet is a good place to witness it but I've never been lucky.
